"Symbols of Courage"
seven murals by Joan Drescher at the Oncology Clinic, Floating Hospital for Children (New England Medical Center) Boston, Ma.

KITE FLYING No. I : "Kite Flying"

This mural introduces the main characters in all seven murals - Chandy, a teenager, four elementary school children, a toddler and mom. All characters are feeling well
and enjoying a summer day on the Boston Common.

NOT FEELING WELL No. II: "Not Feeling Well"

Painted in the blue, cold colors of fear and uncertainty, this mural depicts the feelings' experienced upon receiving a diagnosis. Sometimes a mother's touch is what is needed most; sometimes only a pet can bring comfort and understanding.

THE CLINIC No. III: "The Clinic"

"The  Clinic" is characterized as a place where children can participate in "normal" activities such as playing on a computer while receiving chemo, or choosing a favorite toy from the "magic box" before surgery. "The Clinic" is the place where people show they really care; where patients of all ages can express themselves through play, creativity and imagination, and where everyone joins together to help fight the cancer - care givers, family and  friends.

THE GOLD FISH TANK No. IV: "The Gold Fish Tank"

Transforming cancer cells into gold fish and chemo into stars is the visual theme of this mural Developed as a result of studies that show positive results when patients fight cancer through visualization, this mural helps children in the clinic with the visualization process.

HEALING MANDALA No. V: "Healing Mandala"

Encircling the outside of this mandala are symbols of nature and the four seasons.  The characters in the mural are surrounded by symbols of treatment. The hands that help heal and the heart - at the center - with a star for courage, for making it to the patient's next birthday, are a few of the many symbols pictured.

COMING HOME AGAIN No. VI: "Coming Home Again"

This mural helps young patients know that life can become normal again - with hair growing back, school buses, baseball, friends, family, and even pizza! Some children are remembered in their spiritual home.

CHANDY No. VII: "Chandy"

Chandy represents all the special children who communicated their courage through
poetry and drawing for this project.
